Music plays an active and meaningful role in the education of our students. Through regular music classes and additional (optional) programs, students develop creativity, confidence, and collaboration skills that enrich their academic experience. Each year, all students showcase their talents by participating in three musical performances - two at the school, and one at the Gichi-ziibi Center for the Arts. The performance at the Gichi-ziibi Center is the Christmas Concert in December, and we enjoy inviting our greater school community to attend and support our students.
Upcoming Christmas Concert

Additional Music Programs
Choir
Director: Sue Jewell
The St. Francis of the Lakes Catholic School choir is open to all 4th through 8th grade students. Choir involves 30 minutes of practice each week, where students enjoy singing as well as learning voice exercises and harmony. Choir students perform in all three annual concerts, as well as go caroling at local hospitals and nursing homes.
Band
Director: Erica Koehler
The St. Francis of the Lakes Catholic School band program is also open to 4th-8th grade students. This program teaches students the foundations of music, including note and rhythm reading, dynamics, tone, articulation, and tempo. Additionally, rehearsals and instrument management teach students about responsibility, and this extra level of involvement in all three annual performances regularly builds their confidence.
Private lessons are also offered during school hours and summer.
Cantors
Director: Sue Jewell
During the academic year, 4th-8th grade students have the opportunity to cantor at school Masses and other special celebrations.
There are typically about 4 rotating groups, meaning each group gets to sing at school Mass (Wednesdays) about once per month
In addition to school Masses, special celebrations include Grandparents Day in October & the 11:15 a.m. St. Francis Mass leading up to Catholic Schools Week at the end of January
With a full class schedule, these special students exemplify the virtues of zeal and diligence as they volunteer their recess time to practice with their group
Piano
Instructor: Sue Jewell
Our music teacher, Sue Jewell, is happy to offer private piano lessons to interested students. These can happen before, during, or after school, and are easily integrated into the child’s St. Francis experience. Summer lessons are also available.
